Due to the unexpected cancellation of the Final at Highclere Castle Horse Trials in August, caused by water logging on the course for the first time in seventeen years, and the difficulty of trying to stage the final at another event so late in the season when riders were competing abroad, Mitsubishi Motors decided to award the prizes to the leaderboard at the end of the four qualifying events at Powderham Castle, Somerley Park, Longleat and Wilton.
Haydn Davies, General Manager-Marketing, said "We are delighted to present these awards at the end of a successful year to our deserving riders, who showed their enthusiasm for competing in our Intermediate qualifiers which continues to grow in popularity."
This was the first year of a new three year agreement for riders competing on any intermediate horse at the specified events, at which points were awarded and just one score could be carried forward. The rider with the highest score at the final would win the new prize of £5,000. However, as Oliver Townend and Andrew Nicholson (last year's winner) lay first and second throughout the qualifiers, separated by just two points, and in the absence of a final, Mitsubishi Motors decided to divide the prize into £3,000 and £2,000 between them. Both riders are very happy about that.
